Maps function as lenses through which we perceive the world and are central to our understanding of a place. By emphasising personal, participatory and qualitative forms of data, this workshop seeks to make maps more collaborative, open and inclusive artefacts.

During the workshop, participants will engage in a data walk, where we will collectively observe and map the sensory environment around us. The objective is to explore the diverse and subjective nature of sensory encounters and using mapping as a means to meaningfully reconnect with our shared spaces. Following the group data walk, a collective mapping exercise will facilitate discussions on the subjectivity of maps and representations of a place, and the collective narratives they shape.

The workshop aims to surface the intangible aspects of a place and associate them with our subjective, personal experiences. We hope for the participants to leave with a broader notion of what qualifies as data, a renewed connection to their sensory environment and how it shapes their lived experience of the city.

As part of London Data Week, The Greater London Authority is running an event with Policy in Practice to showcase data-led benefit take-up campaigns commissioned by The Mayor of London and run in partnership with Policy in Practice.

The campaign began its first phase in February 2023 focusing on Pension Credit uptake, securing over £8 million a year for pensioners across the capital. Supported by Age UK London, the initial phase of the campaign saw over 8,000 eligible Londoners in 17 boroughs receive letters inviting them to claim Pension Credit. The Pension Credit campaign is now in its second phase with 23 London boroughs participating.

The campaign is the first of its kind, with local authorities across the capital joining forces to better the lives of residents through proactive outreach and income maximisation.

Pilot campaigns are also underway in selected London boroughs focusing on Healthy Start, Attendance Allowance and Free School Meals enrollment.

There will be a panel discussion and Q&A led by the Policy in Practice campaign team, partners such as Age UK London as well as leading local authorities involved in this project. The event will be followed by a tea and coffee networking session.

Recent advances in AI have led to increased awareness and uptake of AI tools to enhance decision making and the delivery of services, including within the public sector. This event is to showcase a newly developed clinical co-pilot that is being trialled on one of our wards. The co-pilot, called Memori, is supporting the early detection of deterioration in adults with complex brain injury. These patients may not be able to tell us that they are feeling poorly so we can only rely on observations to detect deterioration. Being able to detect deterioration early means acting early to stop the infection. This is particularly important in this vulnerable population where any infection can negatively impact their rehabilitation and their quality of life. We will demonstrate the co-pilot in a very informal way to enable a wide audience to access this event. Anyone interested in learning how we use data to improve the care we provide to our patients is welcome.

Neighbourly Lab, in collaboration with the High Streets Data Service and partners are working with Haringey residents to explore local high streets with data. By getting out and about with community researchers to ask the questions that matter to them (with e.g. shopkeepers, other residents, tourists), the project will surface timely insights about how local communities experience their high streets. This qualitative research will build on existing in-depth quantitative data on business trends and the local retail offer, to capture what life looks like on Haringey’s high streets. In doing so, the research initiative will also explore how to democratise access to and usage of civic data and how seemingly difficult to navigate data can be leveraged by residents to understand more about their communities.

London has emerged as a global hub for AI, boasting a thriving ecosystem of tech startups and world-class universities. This positions the UK’s capital at the forefront of AI development, with over 1,000 AI companies based in the city. These companies are reliant on training data to function effectively. However, tensions have been growing between content creators and AI developers due to concerns over the use of copyrighted material in training datasets.

Publishers and creators with image, text, music and even video find that their content scrapped without permission for training AI models. This is then used to generate works in their style or likeness often without proper attribution, consent or compensation. High profile cases such as the “eerily similar” voice of Scarlet Johansson’s in OpenAI’s ChatGPT is a recurring example. AI companies also need access to high quality training data to create even better models and remain competitive. Is licensing and revenue share for training data the solution?

It is crucial for creative content creators to understand on how to navigate the issue of protecting their data content and receiving fair compensation through data licensing. In this session hosted by Valyu, a data provenance and licensing platform, we will answer some pressing questions regarding:

Step into ‘Your Moment’ powered by The Lαβ where we fuse science with creativity and personal reflection. We delve into the fascinating realm of brain waves, allowing you to have a glimpse into of your mind while you engage in your chosen meaningful moment.

We use a lightweight EEG headset which gives you freedom to explore your experience. Portability allows you to move freely and privately at the venue space. The headset empowers you with real-time insights, fostering a deeper connection with your own mind. We won’t record any data unless asked to in which case it will be anonymously and securely stored for your protection if you do decide to explore your own data deeper. Your data can be deleted on request.

Previous moments that people have asked us to explore include scanning their brain waves while listening to music, singing, dancing, meditating, and playing an instrument. Your moment doesn’t have to be artistic, it’s whatever moment is meaningful to you.

Each pop-up session will be 20 minutes. The first five minutes will be about helping you settle in, to hear about the purpose of The Lαβ, and help you to familiarise yourself with the headset. If you’re still happy at that point, we will move on to capturing ‘Your ‘Moment’ for ten minutes. The final five minutes will be about rounding the session up and answering any questions you may have.

Our bodies work through electricity. When we are in hospital, this electricity is often recorded. You may be familiar with the ‘ECG’ – electricity from the heart. We can also record electricity from other body parts, like the brain. This kind of bioelectrical health data helps us to understand how disease happens, and how we could prevent this.

We want the public to be part of this research journey; in this workshop within London Data Week, we invite your input! Join us for a participatory data visualisation workshop to explore how collaborative drawing strategies can embody, interpret, and imagine the living behaviours of mycelium networks.

Mycelium networks play a vital role in our climate and future; however, they remain largely unknown, unquantifiable, and challenging to describe. They embody unique characteristics of non-linearity, collaboration, variance, adaptability, and decomposition through their interconnectedness with the environment and our lives.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to individually imagine and reflect on mycelium networks through a guided quantitative data and drawing exercise. We will then focus on drawing collaboratively, adapting together to rule-based conditions that explore the movement and connectivity of the mycelium network.

The workshop aims to explore how generating unexpected and infinite drawing outcomes can embrace multiplicity and allow interaction with an unfamiliar and ungraspable subject. It builds on processes that explore network literacy, with the pen touching the paper being the first instance of navigating a network. We hope participants will gain new perspectives on the topics of connection, decomposition and growth, as well as experimental visualisation approaches to engage with data and topics.

AI can write a complete machine learning pipeline in seconds. But how do you know you can trust it in production or as the basis of a policy intervention? The easier AI makes it to generate code, the more critical it becomes to be able to evaluate, explain, and validate what it produces.

In this half-day hackathon, co-hosted by Probabl and the GLA Data for London Team as part of London Data Week, participants will be tasked with training a machine learning model that tackles a real policy problem faced by the Greater London Authority. The twist: assessment will focus on how well participants can evaluate, explain, and vouch for their model – whether it was developed by hand and/or with AI. Participants will be encouraged to use the Python library skore in their evaluations. The winners will have the opportunity to pitch their solution to London’s data leadership in the afternoon.

Note: Participants are asked to bring their own laptop, if possible, for the workshop activities.

We’ll start with welcome speech and a demo of skore. Participants will be asked to form teams of 2-4 and vote on the policy problem they want to tackle during the hackathon. The options of the policy problems include:

• How do we decarbonise London’s buildings?

Biotic Immersion is an immersive participatory multimedia installation exploring citizen science, ecology, and belonging through audio guidance, biodiversity photography, and live data visualisation.

Responding to the exclusion of minority communities from biodiversity initiatives, the project reimagines data collection as sensory, inclusive, and relational. Participants use their smartphones to follow a self-guided audio experience through a nearby garden, photographing biodiversity and uploading images to the iNaturalist app via a custom website. The collected data is transformed into a live projected visualisation within the exhibition space, creating a collective experience that encourages deeper connections between participants, local greenspaces, and the living world.

Join us for a walking tour through this Peckham in south-east London, exploring a story of regeneration, gentrification, and community life. Known as ‘Little Lagos’, Peckham is home to one of the largest Nigerian diaspora populations in the UK. This area has changed dramatically since the turn of the millennium, widely considered one of the most vibrant and trend setting parts of London. Who benefits from these changes, and who is left behind? During the tour, we will visit Nigerian-led religious spaces and explore the intersections between migration, regeneration, and community resilience.

The walk will start at Copeland Park, a former industrial estate in Peckham previously home to as many as 15 churches and which was at the centre of the area’s increased popularity. We will then visit two listed heritage buildings – Peckham Public Hall on Rye Lane and the Old Mill Building on Copeland Road – which are currently occupied by branches of the Christ Apostolic Church, a Nigerian-led Aladura Pentecostal denomination. London generates data about itself constantly – the question is what we do with it.

​For our next KQ Social, hosted in partnership with UCL Grand Challenges during London Data Week 2026, we’re bringing together a cross-section of the city’s research, innovation and policy communities to look at what the numbers are actually telling us about London right now..

​Some of it is striking. Nearly half of London’s workers are in roles where generative AI could automate a significant share of their tasks, a figure well above the UK average. The cost of a nursery place in London runs around 44% higher than elsewhere in the country, while a pint of milk costs roughly the same. And nearly half of all Londoners say they’d consider retraining for a ‘green’ job.

​These aren’t just statistics. They’re signals about a city in transition: in how people work, what they can afford, and where they see opportunity.

Data physicalization is a hands-on process of engaging the public with data literacy to create crafts that encode data in their material characteristics. For this workshop, we will use a toolkit of our design that builds on glyph-based visualization, allowing each participant to make small cardboard sculptures shaped like colourful fish. Participants will then contribute their data sculptures to a common display, with a participatory approach.

​This participatory outdoor session examines the limits of conventional data systems by focusing on the forms of information that remain uncollected, unclassified, or treated as noise. These include environmental fluctuations, informal infrastructural behaviours, social rhythms, and situated knowledge that shape everyday life but rarely enter formal datasets or decision-making frameworks.

​Participants will engage in a structured observation exercise within their own local environments, using a shared set of prompts designed to surface what existing data infrastructures fail to register. The emphasis is on comparison rather than aggregation: how different physical and social contexts produce different “blind spots” in what is perceived as data.

​The session contributes to broader questions in data practice and civic infrastructure, particularly around how data is defined, what is excluded through current measurement systems, and how alternative forms of observation might inform more context-sensitive approaches to analysis and design.

​As part of London Data Week, DataKind UK is hosting a morning unconference for folks who ‘do data’ in charities, community interest companies, voluntary groups, social enterprises, and more. Join us in person to connect, talk shop, and get support from peers and DataKind UK’s expert data volunteers. Bring your burning questions and discussion topics, and we’ll provide a friendly networking space where you can choose which data dilemmas you’d most like to discuss.

Imagine with us radical creative ideas and doomsday scenarios around the products, data and approaches currently used within the community energy sector.

Using gameplay and creative activities, we’ll explore how we might avoid some of the pitfalls around community energy tech and data, and how we might get the best out of our digital resources.

​Through this workshop, organisations will gain a better understanding of their data and how to use it to improve energy projects, efficiency programmes and client relationships, both within their own organisation and in collaboration with others.

Nature and Networks is a participatory data visualisation workshop that explores how collaborative drawing strategies can embody, interpret, and imagine the living behaviours of mycelium networks.

​During the workshop, there will be a short presentation on mycelium, followed by an opportunity for participants to individually imagine and reflect on mycelium networks through a guided quantitative data and drawing exercise. We will then focus on drawing collaboratively, adapting together to rule-based conditions that explore the movement and connectivity of the mycelium network.

​This event is for a general audience; no prior knowledge about data visualisation or mycelium is needed. We will learn together and bring our own interpretations and imagination to the topic.

At the London Tree Appreciation Walk, we will wander around Finsbury Park, then up the Parkland Walk and round Highgate and Queens wood taking time to notice and appreciate the trees we encounter along the way.

It will be a casual, laid back affair with the opportunity to use the PLACES app by EcoGPX to capture and record warm relational traces from along our journey end the trees we encounter.

Let’s be honest. Most data isn’t boring. Most presentations of data are.

We’ve all seen it. A great insight buried in a dashboard. A chart that technically makes sense… but somehow says nothing.A room full of smart people… and no one really knows what to do next.

That’s not a data problem. That’s a delivery problem.

The Data Pitch Lab is a hands-on workshop for people who are curious about data, but want to do more than just analyse it. It’s about turning your thinking into something people can actually feel, understand, and act on.

In this session, we take an idea sometimes messy, sometimes overthought and shape it into a clear story and a short, compelling pitch. You’ll learn how to structure your thinking, design with intention, and speak about your data with confidence (without sounding like you’re reading from a dashboard). Expect a mix of storytelling, design, and a bit of performance energy.

By the end, you’ll have the foundation of a data-driven project you can continue to build and the confidence to actually put it out into the world. Because knowing something is interesting… and making other people care about it…are two very different skills.

Jo Wood, Professor of Visual Analytics at City St George’s will reveal how his analysis of voting patterns across London in the recent council elections revealed a bias, based on where candidates are located on the ballot paper.

Professor Wood’s analysis of the London council elections was written up on the front page of The Guardian newspaper. Jo originally published his analysis on Bluesky on 11 May. The Guardian’s article from 13 May, Easy as ABC: voters in England tend to pick names nearer top of ballot, data suggests, included interviews with two candidates, one of whom failed to secure a seat (and had the last name, Zhong), and the other who won (and had the last name, Adams).

This roundtable discussion will explore how data vis can reveal hidden bias, but could also be a source of bias itself. The panel is drawn from a wide range of specialists, to give a fascinating perspective on both human and non-human data.

Most data we encounter is about us, not made by us. This hands-on workshop flips that. Over 2.5 hours, participants fold a single sheet of paper into an 8-page zine and fill it with their own data encoded using visual variables like colour, shape, size, and pattern.

Each page has a reflection prompt. Some are personal (“three things you carry with you today”). Some are collective, where the room contributes data and each person finds their place within it. By the end, you’ve made a tangible artefact and learned a method you can use again at home, in classrooms, or with your own teams.

We will cover topics like portraits, visual variables, and zine-folding (demo), working through individual prompts with materials at hand, group prompts and collective data pages, and finally, small-group share, discussion, and “how to run this yourself” handout.
